PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The CMSD H. Barber Booker School, located on a two acre site in a residential neighborhood on Cleveland’s west side, is a new 385 student PK-8 school. The new facility will be a three story masonry building which will replace the existing masonry Halle School. While both two and three story designs were considered, site constraints led to the choice of a three story building to maximize space for site amenities. The site will include two playgrounds (one for K and PK and one for grades 1-5), two outdoor learning areas, bike racks, and staff and visitor parking. The project is cofounded by the OFCC and will be constructed under the Construction Manager at Risk model.
BENEFIT / VALUE: Both the new school building and site have been designed to be an integral part of the surrounding community. Through collaborative meetings with neighbors, school staff, and elected officials at each phase of the design process, the design has evolved to address the needs of all involved. Site amenities such as playgrounds and outdoor seating will be shared by the school population and the neighborhood. The school building will also provide joint use of spaces such as the gym and cafeteria with the neighborhood. The building supports the desire for more flexible learning spaces with extended learning areas outside the classrooms for small group and collaborative learning as well as technology available throughout the building. The building will be LEED certified.
