Hayden Bus Maintenance and Storage Garage
East Cleveland, Ohio

Robert P. Madison International was the Prime Consultant for The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) for the complete rehabilitation of the Hayden District Bus Maintenance and Storage Garage.

The Hayden District Garage, one of the four major bus operation facilities for GCRTA, is located in the Northeast Service Area in the City of East Cleveland.  The 215,000 s.f. building is on a 12 acre site and provides storage and service for 181 CNG (compressed natural gas) fueled buses.

RPMI was responsible for developing the Design Program for the facility and performed all Architectural, Mechanical, Site Design for the $22 million rehabilitation.  This revitalization included the upgrade of environmental systems, increased operation efficiency, the enhancement of employee working conditions, incorporation of new technologies and equipment as well as being aesthetically responsive to the surrounding neighborhood.

The project was completed in June of 1998 and now serves as the model for upgrades and modernization for GCRTA.

The work consisted of major remodeling and modernization of a collection of four attached buildings constructed in 1892, 1926, 1952 and 1968.  Each unit was built of different materials, structural systems, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems which were completely in non-compliance with the code.

The design provided for the storage of 350 buses and areas for fueling, washing, tire replacement, light maintenance, fare collection, staff lockers and lunch rooms.

Completed: 1999
Cost: $22,000,000
