RPMI was responsible for programming, schematic and
final design for a new facility for the Division of
Water. The Harvard Yard is the only facility devoted
exclusively to the maintenance and repair of water
lines, meters, hydrants and mains for a service area
containing 2,000,000 people, 545 square miles with 5,000
miles of water mains.
The facility is designed for four major departments;
administration, operations,
service and
maintenance, and engineering and construction.
Twenty acres of land will be developed with
building containing 231,000 sq. ft.
RPMI
was charged with analyzing the existing service facility
and preparing a program and design for the new facility.
The existing facility, which had to remain in operation
during construction, consisted of 20 buildings totaling
approximately 86,660 S.F. on a 20.54 acre site. To keep
the yard in service, the new facility was designed in 3
(three) Phases. The first phase was the design and
construction of 2 (two) buildings - the Radio Repair
Shop which is approximately 4,200 S.F. and the General
Stores Building which is approximately 19,820 S.F. Phase
II was the design and construction of the Main Building
which consists of 116,OOO S.F. The
